About the Play:
Quartet, by Ronald Harwood, is a contemporary dramatic comedy about three friends -- Cissy, Reg and Wilf -- who are retired professional opera singers struggling to make a meaningful life for themselves in a home for aging singers and musicians in Kent, England. Their equilibrium is threatened by the unexpected arrival of Jean, Reg's ex-wife from a brief and disastrous marriage.
2 women:
Jean Horton: once a major star, now dealing with physical frailties and the shock of economic distress; she's still very much the diva.
Cecily (Cissy) Robson: cheerful, easygoing, and eagerly involved in the activities of the home; she battles with lapses into acute memory confusions, and a fear that people may be whispering about her behind her back.
2 men:
Reginald Paget: the prim gentleman artist, writing his autobiography and concerned with the philosophy of art; he tries to maintain a calm and dignified manner, but is susceptible to sudden rages.
Wilfred Bond: the rogue and joker, lively and untidy; he's constantly making sexual innuendoes which mask a lingering sadness over the death of his beloved wife.
All four characters are "mature" in years: The script specifies 70+ but remember that our make-up team can add enough years to anyone over about 50 years.
The roles are all of about equal size. The actors do not actually have to sing.
