A Streetcar Named Desire was written in 1947 by American playwright Tennessee Williams for which he received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1948. The story of gentility versus brutishness and the conflict brought about when different worlds collide, putting love and loyalty to the test, is one that has thrilled audiences worldwide for the best part of sixty years. The Semi-Circle’s production of this classical but timeless play brings together a large international cast of 14 members, accompanied with live music in the atmospheric Helmut Förnbacher Theater.

Play synopsis: Blanche DuBois is a fading, but still-attractive, Southern belle with pretensions to virtue and culture, but with a thinly-masked alcohol problem. She arrives at the New Orleans apartment of her sister Stella and brother-in-law Stanley Kowalski after taking the streetcar named “Desire”. Blanche’s arrival brings disruption to her sister’s and brother-in-law‘s household. Stella‘s concern for her sister‘s well-being infuriates Stanley leading to conflict between Stella and himself. Stanley‘s bachelor friend Mitch is highly attracted to Blanche and inevitably becomes embroiled in the conflict. Stanley discovers Blanche‘s past and he confronts her with the things she has been trying to put behind her. However, his attempts to “unmask” her are cruel and violent. The consequences are as inevitable as they are horrific.
